The Aspire Difference

Reading Intervention

Helping your child read and spell fluently, while comprehending everything they read

The Barton Reading & Spelling System® is a highly structured one-on-one approach that greatly improves the spelling, reading, and writing skills of children, teenagers or adults who struggle due to dyslexia or a learning disability. The Barton System is also helpful for people who just need help improving their reading and spelling skills.

The Barton System shows students how sounds and letters are related and how they act in words, how a reader can attack a word and break it into smaller pieces, and it is a multi-sensory approach. This is particularly important, since dyslexic people learn best by involving all of their senses: visual, auditory, tactile, and kinesthetic.

Our reading comprehension program's goal is to allow students to "see movies in their minds" as they read. Research has shown that students who do not see concept (or mental) imagery of what they read can struggle to understand or remember what they read. The development of concept imagery improves reading and listening comprehension, memory, oral vocabulary, critical thinking, and writing.

Individuals of all ages may experience the symptoms of a weakness in concept imagery, which may cause weakness in:

  • Reading comprehension

  • Listening comprehension

  • Critical thinking and problem solving

  • Following directions

  • Memory

  • Oral language expression

  • Written language expression

  • Grasping humor

  • Interpreting social situations

  • Understanding cause and effect

Math Skill Building

A targeted focus on the skills your child needs to be a successful problem solver and critical thinker

Aspire Learning Center utilizes multiple math curricula and chooses the best combination to suit your child's needs. Following an academic assessment, specific skill areas are targeted to bring each student back up to speed in their math studies, be it in arithmetic, algebra, geometry, or beyond!

We utilize systematic and cumulative approaches to give each student a definite, logical sequence of concept instruction. Our instruction is structured with step-by-step procedures for introducing, reviewing, practicing, and mastering concepts. Each lesson teaches using multi-sensory tools such as videos, manipulatives, and other resources, designed to appeal to any type of learner. We also align our instruction and materials to the California Common Core State Standards.

Students may also bring in any math homework they have to complete it with our tutors' assistance.

Handwriting Mastery

A multi-sensory approach to building printing and cursive handwriting abilities

Our handwriting curriculum draws from years of innovation and research to provide developmentally appropriate, multisensory tools and strategies to enhance each student's handwriting skills. The program follows research that demonstrates children learn more effectively by actively doing, with materials that address all styles of learning. This goes beyond just paper and pencil - our students routinely use chalkboards, chalk, sponges, whiteboards, pens, and even iPads to build their handwriting skills!

Subject-Specific Tutoring

Giving your student the support they need across the curriculum

We have a diverse academic staff that has experience across the many school subject areas. In addition, our large resource library is stocked with materials covering many individual subjects, including reading, spelling, writing, grammar, mathematics, social studies/history, and the sciences. Our experienced academic staff is here to help you, however you need us!

Reading Assistant

Employs cutting-edge speech recognition technology to listen to and support students as they read

Research shows that the single best practice for developing reading fluency is one-to-one guided oral reading. But in today’s classroom, it’s difficult for teachers to give every student all the one-on-one reading support they need, or for parents to find time to provide individualized reading support to their children.

Reading Assistant™ can help, acting as a personal, interactive reading tutor to give learners the practice and support they need to improve their reading, amplifying the teacher’s instruction.

Reading Assistant is the only online reading tool that uses advanced speech recognition technology to support and correct students as they read aloud – never missing a teachable moment. No other e-book or program provides comparable support. With the help of a supportive listener, students build reading fluency and comprehension.
